JOAN HALL

Native New Yorker, Joan Hall, began her art training at an early age. Her artist parents enrolled her in classes at Pratt Institute and The Brooklyn Museum Art School. However, Joan's interests led her to dance and she attended Juilliard School of Music. After flunking ballet, she received commissions for set design, and went to Holland to work with the Nederlands Dance Theatre. Upon returning to NYC she also worked with the American Mime Theatre. Her desire to work on a smaller scale led her to the art of assemblage and collage. Joan was a pioneer in the field of collage illustration and her credits include the cover of TIME and numerous other publications. She has exhibited worldwide and was commissioned by the Americal Cultural Center/USIS to exhibit, lecture, and conduct collage workshops in France, India, and Brazil. In 2001 Ms. Hall received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to go to Mexico to train teachers how to educate children about ecology by recycling scrap images and found objects into art. Joan has taught Collage at The School of Visual Arts, NY since 1978.
